The Be a Tree program is a dog bite prevention seminar program for school age children. This program focuses on fun and interactive activities to teach children how to read dog body language and how to act safely around their own dog and strange dogs. Doggone Safe discourages presenters from bringing live dogs into the classroom.

The Be a Tree program is supported by a teacher kit that presenters use to ensure a consistent and accurate presentation. The kit and the program have been developed and reviewed by experts. Click here to find out about the teacher kit and see what the experts have to say. Download a one page description of the kit.

The teacher kit has been translated into French and French language programs are available in some areas of Quebec. Please contact Quebec co-ordinator Sherri Utter for information about French language Be a Tree programming.

La "trousse d'enseignement" a été traduite en français.  Veuillez contacter la coordonnatrice pour le Québec, Sherri Utter, afin d'obtenir des informations au sujet du programme "Bas les Pattes".

In some locations the Be a Tree program is available free of charge through the generosity of individual presenters and/or sponsoring businesses. Please contact Doggone Safe to see if there are presenters in your area or if you know of a potential corporate sponsor who may be interested in finding out about sponsoring a program for your school or group. Doggone Safe will assist you in approaching sponsors that you identify.

In Ontario some members of the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT) are available to visit your group or school to deliver the Be a Tree program free of charge. This is made possible due to the individual commitment of the veterinary technician, the generosity of the veterinary clinic where the technician works and the support of the OAVT. The OAVT endorses the Be a Tree program and members can earn Continuing Education Credits for delivering the program. Read press release.

OAVT members please contact your organization for details.

Be a Tree Presenters

The Be a Tree program can be presented by anyone who purchases a teacher kit. Purchasers of the kit have demonstrated a commitment to dog bite prevention education and child safely. Purchasers have included teachers, dog industry retailers, nurses, fire fighters, police officers, animal control officers, humane societies, dog clubs, breed clubs, veterinary technicians and veterinarians. The kit was designed and tested to ensure consistent and accurate program delivery even by those unfamiliar with the program. The kit comes with a video that shows one of the program creators delivering the program to a group of grade 3 students to allow new presenters to see how the program should be delivered. Anyone who has purchased a Be a Tree kit has access to free email and phone support from the program creators.

Some Be a Tree presenters are members of Doggone Safe. Doggone Safe members are committed to dog bite prevention education and child safety. This does not imply that Doggone Safe has conducted an evaluation of the presenter or that Doggone Safe recommends or endorses the presenter.

Find out more about becoming a Be a Tree presenter and the benefits of becoming a Doggone Safe member.

Some Be a Tree presenters are licensed by Doggone Safe. This means that they have signed the license agreement and have agreed not to bring a live dog into the classroom during a Be a Tree session. They are allowed to use the Be a Tree logo in promoting their business and the program. They agree to pay a license fee of $10 to Doggone Safe if they charge admission (other than just to cover their expenses). Doggone Safe has not conducted an evaluation of the licensed presenters and licensing does not constitute an endorsement of the presenter by Doggone Safe.

Click here to read why Doggone Safe does not use live dogs and does not license presenters who wish to bring a live dog into a presentation.
